2018 Conductor Search

The Gateway Festival Orchestra announces a part-time position as Music Director and Conductor of the Orchestra to begin in January 2019. We seek a dynamic orchestral conductor well versed in standard repertoire. Required qualifications: master’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience.

The Music Director shall:

  • Participate in board meetings and be directly involved in decisions concerning programming and personnel.
  • Plan concert repertoire and soloists for the concert season.
  • Contact soloists, guest artists, special guests, etc. regarding availability and repertoire and make commitments for their services.
  • Work with the orchestra librarian to acquire and prepare the performance materials for the season; administer a budget (or budget policy) for music rental and acquisition as agreed upon with the board.
  • Work with the orchestra personnel manager to determine player requirements and player personnel hired to perform.
  • Provide season overview information and written program content for each concert on agreed upon schedules.
  • Have the opportunity to proofread all program copy and public documents before printing and distribution.
  • Conduct four regularly scheduled rehearsals (Saturday morning) and concerts (Sunday evening) in July at Brookings Quadrangle on the Washington University in St. Louis campus or at other times by mutual agreement.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
