There will be a memorial service honoring William Schatzkamer on Saturday, November 10 at 9:30 a.m. at Graham Chapel on the Washington University Campus.

The Board of the Gateway Festival Orchestra has established the William Schatzkamer Memorial Young Artists’ Fund. If you wish to donate to this fund, you may write a check to:

Roland Quest Memorial Fund

At the recommendation of Phyllis Tirmenstein, The Quest Memorial Foundation of Greater St. Louis Community Foundation has approved a $10,000 matching grant in honor of Gateway Festival Orchestra’s 50th season in 2013. We are already progressing toward this goal, and hope to meet it through the continuing generosity of our individual donors.

Founding conductor of the Gateway Festival Orchestra dies

Pianist and conductor William Schatzkamer, professor emeritus of music in Arts & Sciences at Washington University, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 of congestive heart failure at his home in Olivette. He was 96.

Schatzkamer was the founding conductor and musical director of the Gateway Festival Orchestra of St. Louis, which continues to present an annual series of summer concerts. Since 1970, those concerts have been held in WUSTL’s Brookings Quadrangle.

A memorial serivce will begin at 9:30 Saturday, November 10, in Graham Chapel.

Handicap Accessiblity

Starting July 8, 2012 and through the rest of the 2012 season, there will be improved handicap accessibility for the Gateway Festival Orchestra concerts. At the outer southeast corner of the Quadrangle, there is a small circle drive and a ramp that goes to a door on the south end of Brookings Hall. Entering through that door, visitors will find an elevator they can take to the interior level of the Quadrangle.
