Founding conductor of the Gateway Festival Orchestra dies

Pianist and conductor William Schatzkamer, professor emeritus of music in Arts & Sciences at Washington University, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 of congestive heart failure at his home in Olivette.  He was 96.

Schatzkamer was the founding conductor and musical director of the Gateway Festival Orchestra of St. Louis, which continues to present an annual series of summer concerts.  Since 1970, those concerts have been held in WUSTL’s Brookings Quadrangle.

A memorial serivce will begin at 9:30 Saturday, November 10, in Graham Chapel.
